We love to clarify

We support journalists with scientific statements and background information which they are free to use. And we develop new tools for digital science journalism.

We work on a non-profit basis and aim to contribute to forming sound public opinion –because reporting that draws on the best possible knowledge helps society to make wise democratic decisions. All in line with our motto: We love to
clarify!

Financing

Our activities are funded by our two partners – the Klaus Tschira Foundation and the WPK – the Science Journalists – as well as by sponsors in academia, business, the media and society. They support us through their membership in the Association of Friends and through donations. We also receive grants from third-party funded research projects.

Independence

We are independent. This means that neither our sponsors nor our partners nor other third parties can influence the topics we cover or the researchers we select, who then become part of our database. This is guaranteed by our Articles of Association and confirmed in writing by our sponsors.

Our mission statement

We love to clarify! True to this motto we unfailingly work to transfer truth and knowledge
to society. In this undertaking, journalism is indispensable to us. We have formulated our mission, goals and values in a mission statement.

Mission statement

Journalism and science are essential for our democracy – we are a true intermediary.

Who we are

International network

We are part of an international network. Other Science Media Centers around the
world: in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan and Spain. We have a common charter but operate independently of one another. When the opportunity arises, we cooperate on things like selecting topics and organising press briefings.

We systematically address criticism

It monitors and controls whether we are fulfilling our mission as a SMC. To this end, the board gets together with our leadership four times a year. It is composed of five representatives of academia, civil society and journalism.

We receive valuable input from research, the media and science communication at our regular meetings with our advisory board. The members advise us, pose critical questions and give us new ideas for our work.
